Story: John was in the United States Army. As of 2005, John held the rank of Sergeant; upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he held the rank of Master Sergeant. While with his unit in Afghanistan, the group ended up in a trap. The men of the unit were all killed, but John killed the entire group of assailants. After one of his times back home Diggle saw the "ghost" of a fellow soldier who had died, a symptom of survivor's guilt, and only made it go away once he figured out what the ghost was trying to tell him. While in Afghanistan, he married fellow soldier Lyla Michaels. Their marriage fell apart sometime after they returned to the States, and John went back to Afghanistan for his third tour of duty. During his time in Afghanistan, Diggle also met Ted Gaynor, a fellow soldier who saved his life from the enemy. John was hired for the safety of Oliver Queen but Oliver continued to disappear and one day John followed him and discovered that he is the Green Arrow, John became Oliver's partner in the crime fight, including posing as the archer several times To help Oliver. The time passed and John's wife, Lyla, had become the director of A.R.G.U.S because Amanda Waller was not available at the time, and at one point John was fed up with being at his side and told Oliver he was sick of being left behind and he wanted to get into the missions, but Oliver did not authorize so John said Lyla and explained that it was something he needed to redeem himself for what he did in Afghanistan so Lyla built him a suit that was resistant to bullets and knives and began to be the watcher of Suicide Squad. When Amanda Returned and tried to change his methods but John did not like it so he decided to fight alone but Oliver did not let him and he admitted that he was wrong and that the Green Arrow will need yhis help and so Felicity gave him the codenamed of The Guardian.

-He wears the deadshot bracelets because he finds them useful and because he thinks that deadshot died on a mission.
